Notice of Modification to the List of Permitted Food Enzymes to Enable the Use of Glutaminase From Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GT2 in Various Unstandardized Foods

Reference Number: NOM/ADM-0139 [2019-09-04]

Background

Health Canada's Food Directorate completed a premarket safety assessment of a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of glutaminase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GT2 in various unstandardized foods.

A Notice of Health Canada's Proposal to Enable the Use of Glutaminase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GT2 as a Food Enzyme in Various Unstandardized Foods [NOP/ADP-0031] was published on February 4, 2019. The proposal was open to the public for comment for 75 days. No comments were received during this period.

The results of the premarket assessment support the safety of glutaminase from Bacillus amyloliquefaciens GT2 for its requested uses. Consequently, Health Canada has enabled the use of glutaminase described in the information document below by modifying the List of Permitted Food Enzymes, effective September 4, 2019.

The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Department's decision in this regard and to provide the appropriate contact information for any inquiries or for those wishing to submit any new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
