Health Canada's Food Directorate received a food additive submission seeking approval for the use of erythritol in food thickener products at a level of 2.0%.
Erythritol is already a permitted food additive in Canada. The Food Directorate determined that information related to the safety of erythritol supports extending its use to food thickener products at a level of 2.0%. Therefore, the Department has enabled the use of erythritol as described in the information document below by modifying the List of Permitted Sweeteners, effective March 13, 2018.
The purpose of this communication is to publically announce the Food Directorate's decision in this regard and to provide contact information for inquiries or for those wishing to submit new scientific information relevant to the safety of this food additive.
